Estate Manager (Private & Commercial)
Overview
We’re working on a search for a Senior Estate Manager for a substantial private and commercial estate in Wiltshire, extending over 1,000 acres.
The estate is mixed-use: working farmland, managed forestry, private and kitchen gardens, a family residence with extensive grounds (lakes, cabins, saunas and entertaining spaces), and recreational lakes with guest cabins. Commercial activity is led by a well-established shoot, alongside several developing lifestyle ventures, supported by a team of 21 staff and contractors. The family is in residence at weekends and holidays, so weekend working should be expected, particularly in season.
We’re looking for someone with genuine commercial acumen who runs the estate’s enterprises as performing assets. Candidates from a land agency, chartered surveying, or rural estate management background will find the scope familiar, and RICS-qualified professionals will recognise the mix of built environment, land management and commercial responsibility. The role calls for adaptability and diplomacy: balancing competing stakeholder priorities while keeping the Principal’s objectives central.
The position reports to the Principal via his Chief of Staff. A relocation package will be considered for exceptional candidates.
Responsibilities
- Built environment oversight: maintenance, facilities, utilities, infrastructure, contracts
- Line management of 21 estate staff; oversight of all teams and contractors on site
- Daily direction to team heads; consistent standards across departments
- Compliance: legislation, health and safety, training, insurance
- Main point of contact with the Principal and his Chief of Staff
- Accurate estate record-keeping
- Commercial oversight: hospitality and events, the shoot (36 x 300–400 bird days per season), simulated days, new revenue streams
- Rural land management — farming, forestry, agriculture, environmental — with external specialists
- Project management of capital works: renovations, new builds, infrastructure installs
- Estate administration and finance: monthly reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow
- Cost control and efficiency improvements
Requirements
- Estate management experience at comparable scale, across private and commercial land use
- RICS qualification or equivalent rural/estate credentials advantageous
- Strong commercial acumen and enterprise reporting experience
- Line management of mixed employee/contractor teams
- Working knowledge of compliance, health and safety, and rural regulation
- Experience managing built environment maintenance, contracts and infrastructure
- Financial fluency — budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, monthly reporting
- Shoot management experience or strong working knowledge of shoot operations
- A high level of discretion suited to a UHNW private household environment
